PULMONARY REHABILITATION
Pulmonary Rehabilitation | Physical Therapy | Occupational Therapy
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a program designed to improve your quality of life through therapy, emotional support and education. You will work with a multidisciplinary team who are specially trained to treat people with lung disease. Each patient's program will start with a comprehensive evaluation by a respiratory therapist. Through a carefully planned, integrated and individualized program of physical conditioning, exercise, and educational and nutritional counseling, physical endurance is increased and your quality of life will be improved.
Lung disease is the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States. There are two types of lung disease, obstructive and restrictive.
Obstructive
Obstructive lung diseases cause narrowing or blockage of the airways. Examples of obstructive lung disease are chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, and bronchiectasis. In the United States, COPD includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
COPD is the most common form of lung disease in the United States and is the 4th leading cause of death. It is defined as a lung disease in which the lungs are damaged, making it hard to breathe. In chronic bronchitis, the airways, or tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs are partially obstructed by inflammation or excess mucous, making it difficult to breathe. At the end of the airways, are balloon like sacs called alveoli. In healthy people, they are elastic and springy, expanding with inhalation and deflating with exhalation. In patients with emphysema, these alveoli lose their elasticity and become floppy, resulting in less air getting in and out of the lungs.
Restrictive
Restrictive lung disease caused from the loss of lung, decrease in lung's ability to expand or transfer oxygen and carbon dioxide with the blood. Examples of restrictive lung disease are lung cancer, pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis, and sarcoidosis.
Although, COPD is the most common form of lung disease, pulmonary rehabilitation benefits patients with all types of lung disease, including: interstitial lung disease, lung transplant, lobectomy, resection, dyspnea, and mesothelioma.

According to a recent Milken Institute study on the economic impact of chronic disease, the results are overwhelming. On a national level, the economic impact of chronic disease is $1.33 trillion. There are 49.2 million reported cases in the United States of persons with pulmonary disorders. In Illinois, the economic impact was $56.1 billion dollars in 2003, and rising. On our current path, by the year 2023, the economic cost will estimate at $150 billion. In altering our path by improvements in preventative and management of chronic diseases, we can decrease the economic costs by $41 billion (27%). Of these reported cases of chronic disease, pulmonary conditions ranked number one with 2,116,000 reported cases.

After being diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis, I found the one thing that helped me maintain quality of life was my Pulmonary Rehab program. It is the best thing I can ever do for myself.
-Priscilla, 60, Pulmonary Fibrosis
Before I was diagnosed with COPD my life was changing not for the better. Now, since I am in Pulmonary Rehab and continuing with the maintenance program, my outlook on life is healthier and happier. My family is happy that we can look forward to a happy future again.
-Susie, 56, COPD
Pulmonary Rehab has taught me how to pace my activities, giving me increased strength and endurance. Being in a rehab program with people who have the same problems allows me to get out and not feel isolated. Even though I still have to be careful with what I do, I can do more with less symptom flare up.
-Sandy, 59, Chronic Obstructive Asthma
Pulmonary Rehab has taught me the correct breathing method for my disease. I was able to decrease my oxygen during the day while performing my daily activities. Being among people with similar breathing problems helps me realize I am not an isolated cause.
